On April 1st, Pitzer became the first US higher education institution to enact a significant measure of the Palestinian led call for academic boycott of Israel by closing its study abroad program to the University of Haifa. Haifa University is one of the pillar schools of the Israeli military and actively aids Israels ongoing apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide of Palestine. This BDS victory comes after 6+ years of student organizing despite constant repression by Pitzer administration and board of trustees.

On Thursday April 11th Pitzer’s most inclusive shared governance body (College Council) comprised of students, faculty, and staff, passed resolution 60-R-5 for a complete academic boycott of israeli universities complicit in genocide and apartheid. Before this resolution got to College Council, it was voted on unanimously through Pitzer’s Student Senate which is one of the largest per-capita college student governments in the world. These votes through Pitzer government affirm the Pitzer communities demand for a principled Boycott Divestment Sanctions resolution at Pitzer in pursuit of a free Palestine. An hour after this decision President Strom Thacker vetoed this historic resolution, aligning himself firmly with apartheid and betraying Pitzer’s core values.

I am an admitted student for Pitzer’s class of 2028. I applied to this school because I was excited by Pitzer’s core values of social responsibility and student engagement.

When applying to this school, I imagined myself representing my peers – perhaps as one of the student senators who recently voted unanimously for an academic boycott of Israel. I thought about where I would find a community – probably in one of the 20+ affinity groups and clubs that stand in unwavering support of an academic boycott. I got excited about attending a school that teaches justice and encourages students to bring what they learn into the world to enact substantive social change.

Your refusal to accept the vote of students, faculty, and staff for an academic boycott of Israeli universities complicit in genocide and apartheid is incredibly disappointing. Not only is this antithetical to the values of Pitzer as they were advertised to me, but it is a despicable stance against humanity in the midst of a genocide. I am aware of your utter disregard for the interests of the student body and I am seriously doubting my enrollment to this hypocritical institution.

We, prospective Pitzer students and current student organizers, demand that you do not stand in the way of the overwhelming community support for BDS and approve the resolution for academic boycott that was passed through the College Council on April 11th.

I am excited to begin college next fall. So were the thousands of Palestinian students who were murdered before they got the chance to engage in higher education at Gazan universities, which have all been destroyed.

Having seen your disregard for your students and faculty, not to mention our colleagues and classmates in Palestine, I am seriously considering going elsewhere for my undergraduate education. If I do decide to attend this school, I am committed to holding you and Pitzer College accountable to its core values.
